Captivating: Chapter One

There is a book entitled Captivating, Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul. It's written by John & Stasi Eldredge. Every year I go through this stage of wanting to read it. I already own the book, thanks Cara, but for some reason I never make it all the way through.

It's not that I don't like the book, but I think it's sooooo much to take in. "Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul" sounds a bit cliche, right? That was the first impression I had of the book. It had to have some significance to Cara though. She doesn't just buy any book for a group of friends. She's very particular when it comes to gift giving. Trust me. ;) It's actually funny, some of the quotes that I have highlighted in the book no longer jump out at me. Not literally of course, you know what I mean.....

So it's been decided that after every chapter or so, I'm going to post some of the things that caught my eye or really spoke to me. DISCLAIMER: THIS WILL BE SAPPY AND HEARTFELT. Prepare accordingly.

The first chapter is titled "The Heart of a Woman." One of the first quotes is actually one of my favorites...

"You belong among the wildflowers. You belong in a boat out at sea. You belong with your love on your arm. You belong somewhere you feel free." -Tom Petty*

*I should have always warned you that this will be cheesy. I love a good cheesy quote.

FUN FACT!
Stasi mentions that she is 45 while writing this book. But a lot of the things that are mentioned are things that any girl/woman can relate to.

Below is the first paragraph that really made me ugly cry.

"Every woman I've ever met feels it- something deeper than just the sense of failing at what she does. An underlying, gut feeling of failing at who she is. I am not enough, and I am too much at the same time. Not pretty enough, not thin enough, not kind enough, not gracious enough, not disciplined enough. But too emotional, too needy, too sensitive, too strong, too opinionated, too messy. The result is SHAME, the universal companion of women. It haunts us, nipping at our heels, feeding on our deepest fear that we will end up abandoned and alone."

No one can say that they can't relate to that. It covers everything. There are so many times when I am as if I am nothing. I am useless and pitiful. There is no need for me to feel that way though. My blessings are abundant, and yet these petty things can bring me down so quickly. I am always worried that I am not going to be enough for a person. Whether it be a family member, friend, or even boyfriend, the worry is always there. Silly girls, and probably guys as well.

In this book they include a list of items that women long for.
1.) To be romanced.

2.) To play an irreplaceable role in a great adventure.
3.) To unveil beauty.

I can't deny any of those items, because they are all things that I am constantly thinking about. I won't deny that.

Stasi also mentions that too often girls are too ashamed to admit to who they are. When she was younger, she mentioned that she always wanted to be a heroine and have her hero come for her. What little girl didn't play that game? I was always reenacting some Disney movie, usually Cinderella, because I wanted Prince Charming to come and save me.

There is one song they mention in particular in this chapter. I will link it here.

Don't continue reading until you listen. Pretty please? It's important to understand what I talk about next.

Are you done yet?

"The desire to be beautiful is an ageless longing."

When I used to attend church camp, we would always go to two nursing homes to sing songs and play with puppets. If you have never done anything like that, please go. The residents absolutely loved getting interaction with younger kids. All they wanted to do was talk and show you items they had. Whether it was a piece of clothing, stuffed animal, or picture. They just wanted to hear you say that it was beautiful or pretty.

I love hearing that I am beautiful, even if I don't always believe that person. It's nice to know that someone thinks it.

"We desire to possess a beauty that is worth pursuing, worth fighting for, a beauty that is core to who we truly are. We want beauty that can be seen; beauty that can be felt; beauty that affects others; a beauty all our own to unveil."

One of the last things mentioned in this chapter is written by John.

What a Man longs for:
1.) A battle to fight.
2.) A longing for adventure.
3.) A beauty to rescue.

Isn't that precious? I really do hope it's true.

Last but not least. They leave the reader with three words that describe what a woman wants to be.

Glorious. Powerful. Captivating.
